The group together with the Municipal sanitary Inspector had house to house visit from sector 1 to 7 in order to check their toilet facilities and their solid waste management.

The council on the other hand are already processing their adaptation of the Municipal ordinance about the implementation of ZOD in the Barangay. As of the moment, the ordinance is already at its 1st reading.

In preparation with the provincial visit, the team also went to the Brgy. Motibot Elementary School to orient teachers and train students on proper toilet etiquette, proper Solid waste management and proper hand washing.

May all of these efforts be a gateway to achieve the ZOD certification in Barangay Motibot.

Throughout the years, our group have been emphasizing on the importance of having sanitary toilet facility and extend our efforts to coordinate with different organizations on the acquisition of toilet bowls as part of our community Health Plan.

Last exposure, with the help of the Barangay council, we handed toilet bowls to identified recipients. They were given 15 days to accomplish their own toilet facilities for the next re inspection. Almost all of those who received the toilet bowls were able to have their sanitary toilet facilities.

With the recent Evaluation of our group, we revisit those who were given with toilet facility, and we were grateful to witness that alot of them were able to build their own toilet facilities and were able to use it.

This month, together with our sanitary Inspector, barangay council, nurse and bhws, we re-evaluated the toilet facilities of the residence of Barangay Motibot in line with the Goal of having Zero Open Defecation certification.

Through this initiative, it ushers a change where residents become enlightened of the risks and fecal-oral diseases brought about by open defecation and unsanitary toilet facilities won't foster.

Due to pandemic, our team movements were very limited. However, we need to be innovative to continue our community health plan despite the situation.

As part of our toilet and sanitation community health plan, we were able to turn over soaps, toothbrush, toothpaste and health teaching materials last April 22, 2021 which was possible through the help of our dear sponsors. Posters for proper handwashing were already posted by our BHW to different handwashing areas in the Barangay.

Our team strategy was restricted on health teaching that was conducted by our Barangay Health Workers and organized by our Nurse. For the health teaching, we provided flip charts and health teaching guide manuals for our Barangay Health Workers to properly relay the information. We were also able to provide infomercials about the importance of having toilet facility for the safety of their community and for their own.

Health teaching was done by sector and with safety precaution like social distancing and using face mask. Daily reminder for our BHWs to disinfect and sanitized was also done. With that, we would like to give gratitude and credits to our BHWs and Nurse for continuing our health teaching even we are not with them as of the moment.

Last community exposure, we have achieved some of our plans for our community health plans. Thankfully the community people are really coordinating with us and are willing to listen with what we are teaching and continuously supporting our future activities. Our achieved activities are as follows:

a.       Conduction of lecture to community people on  improved toilet, sanitation, and its importance

b.      Conduction of lecture on school-based lecture awareness campaigns and proper handwashing

c.       Coordination with government agencies and NGOs for the acquisition of water-sealed toilet bowls

d.       Identification and creation of master list of water-sealed toilet recipients

We conducted pre test and post test for our lectures and we are pleased to share that our community people have increased scores after our lectures. Students were also participative with our activities as well as the teachers in the elementary school. Also, with the help of our barangay health workers and barangay officers, we were able to achieve the our desired planned for the last exposure. With their help, we were also able to plan out our future activities for the barangay such as the acquisition of additional water-sealed toilet bowls, formulation of barangay ordinance on mandatory toilet facility and penalization of violators, Identification of committee to oversee annual monitoring and to report violators of the ordinance.

Currently, due to the pandemic, we have prepared activities that will be accordance with the “New normal” and the safety guidelines and protocols of COVID-19. We were planning to re conduct the lectures for handwashing and proper sanitation to the community people, with proper social distancing, proper protective equipments and with less than 10 people involve in the lecture. We will also take precaution on false information of the COVID-19 and will spread positivity and proper information such as the importance of handwashing to prevent the virus.

One of the goals of the WHO is that every person in the world has access to toilets that safely contain excreta. This is essential to protect the health of individuals, communities and the environment from disease such as Diarrhea, which is the top 2 cause of morbidity in Barangay Motibot since 2014. This concern was raised to the council last June 2019 by the group which made them alarmed with current situation of the barangay in terms of the inadequate toilet facilities and how this affect the health of the community people. The group also suggested ways on how to procure water-sealed toilet bowls, such as asking help from the municipality’s General Service Office (GSO).

Months later, the council did their part on requesting for water-sealed toilet bowls. Luckily, they were 20 water-sealed toilet bowls which were already given to 12 households or families without toilet facilities. 8 water-sealed toilet bowls were still in the Barangay hall for those families without toilet facilities. The barangay council also agreed that no one can procure the toilet bowls unless those who are in need also do their part, which is to have their own septic tanks or cemented holes. It was heartwarming that the council is listening to every health dilemma that we present to them. With this partnership, the group is doing their best to locate and identify families without toilet facilities to promote health and wellness.

Aside from the fact that the group wants to declare the Zero Open Defecation Program in Barangay Motibot, they are also more concern on the health problems if all of these can’t be prevented. Together with the people, we will push the campaign for the procurement of toilet, in order for every person to have access to toilet.
