The Ateneo de Zamboanga School of Medicine, Team Motibot together with the barangay health workers conducted a 5-day Waste Analysis Characterization Study (WACS): to know the highest percentage waste generated in Barangay Motibot. The theme for this year’s exposure for solid waste management community health plan “Tungod Mo Limpyo Mo, Basura Mo Hipuson Mo” in which selected households were chosen per sector to be involved in the study. A total of 61 households were chosen, 10 percent of the total households per sector. The school, health center, satellite markets and general stores were also included in the study. Each chosen households and establishments were provided with 4 sacks, each properly labelled with biodegradable waste (Malata), recyclable waste (Magamit Pa), residual waste (Dili Malata) and special waste (Makahilo), along with distributed sacks a pamphlet was also given. Each waste generated per household and establishment were collected daily and a representative was required to sign in WACS monitoring sheet, waste per household were weighed individually, and gathered together for a cumulative weight.
After 5 days of collection, each data obtained were analyzed and summed up to know the most number of waste generated in Barangay Motibot. A total of 247kg of waste was collected, which includes 106.9kg (43.28%) Biodegradable waste, 63.7 (25.79%) Recyclable waste, 59.1kg (23.93%) Residual waste, and 17.3kg (7%) Special waste. Collected biodegradable waste were disposed off in a compost pile made by the group in an area allotted by the barangay health worker, recyclable waste were brought to junk shop to generate some funds for the snacks of the team, special and residual waste were brought to the material recovery facility to be collected by the dump trunk.
