Waste management is defined as the activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes the collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste, together with monitoring and regulation of the waste management process. Improper disposal of barangay solid waste can create unsanitary conditions, and these conditions in turn can lead to pollution of the environment and to outbreaks of vector-borne disease—that is, diseases spread by rodents and insects.
A crucial part in the solid waste management process is for the core team to be able to identify and analyze the current situation of the community to provide a firm basis for critical planning decisions and to be able to acquire baseline data that can be the basis for future evaluation of changes and impacts of the planned solid waste management programs and activities. In line with this, the team conducted a Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS), a 5-day collection, processing and analysis of waste generated from various sources in barangay Motibot. The study aims to gather baseline data regarding waste quantity and composition so that the team may be able to create relevant waste management programs and activities. The results of the study showed that out of the 247kg of waste collected; 43.28% of the wastes are biodegradable, 25.79% are recyclable, 23.93% are residual and 7.00% are special trash. This shows that waste management programs should be geared more towards biodegradable and recyclable types of wastes.
Education and information dissemination campaigns also started beginning with lectures conducted to the community people, barangay council, and grade school students in Motibot Elementary School. This activity aims to increase the knowledge of the community regarding solid waste management. Pre-tests and post-tests were given to measure the lecture’s effectivity. Pamphlets, containing proper segregation information and ordinances implemented in the barangay, were also handed to households to supplement the lectures given. Lastly, posters were placed in key locations in the barangay including, the seven (7) Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), school bulletin boards and the barangay hall. All of these are only few of the planned programs of the team to ensure that the goal of increasing the number of households practicing solid waste management in barangay Motibot is achieved by year 2022.
